I lost track of time sitting at my desk. Nobody from the interrogation room had called with an update. The only one that called was Constantine to inform me that the city was on lockdown and the only ones allowed out were the cops, firefighters for extreme emergencies, and the CDC, or us. That had been several hours ago. I glanced at the clock on my desk and it was almost eleven in the morning. Two and a half hours of straight work and I still had half of the stack of papers to review. Why didn’t I delegate this to someone?

Ring, ring, ring.

I picked up the handset on the phone on my desk.

“Hello,” I answered.

“Isis, we have a situation.” The words rushed out of Bob. “We have a supernatural attack at Kidtopia.”

“Are you serious?” I answered, standing behind my desk.

“Yes, hurry,” said Bob.

“I’ll meet you at the parking lot,” I replied and hung up the phone.

I had never been so happy to have an attack taking place. It wasn’t like I was trying to run away from all the reports, requests for reconsideration on sentences, ban appeals, or the other fifty petitions I received per week. I was just anxious and needed something physical to do. Not to mention the fact that attacks during the day in the middle of the city were bad publicity. We had been lucky we were able to cover up all the strange incidents around town. I wanted to keep my amazing track record, at least until tomorrow. I double checked my pockets to make sure I had all my weapons before leaving my office.

Bob, Shorty, and Katrina were all outside by the time I made it to the Deathmobile. They were closer to the cars than I was, at least that was my excuse. Katrina had added a M16 to her arsenal and was ready to hurt someone. We all got in our designated vehicles and drove towards Kidtopia, the playground next to the public library.

The drive to Kidtopia was less than five minutes from the station. Katrina and I rode together in the Deathmobile, and Bob was with Shorty in his truck. A truck was important in case we had a prisoner or suspect to arrest.

The library had been evacuated, and the place was dark. I parked the Deathmobile in the library’s parking lot instead of next to the park. With my track record, I couldn’t afford some freak accident blowing up the Deathmobile today.

Katrina and I ran across the street from the library towards the playground. We heard screams coming from behind the playground and rushed over to that area. Katrina made her way towards the back weapons on the ready, and I followed, my scythe in my arms and ready for whatever was to come. Katrina maneuvered her M16 to her front so she was ready to fire. When we came upon the scene, we saw the screams were coming from two teen shifters who were being attacked by two trolls.
